Spinning Hope and Tradition in Amasia

By Qnarik Hakobyan | Social Media Manager

Seven women get a new livelihood from spinning
Seven women get a new livelihood from spinning

In our little spinning center in Amasia in the far northeast corner of Armenia, every day tells a story of hope, tradition, and hard work. Tucked up in a corner bordering Georgia and Turkey, the click-click-click of the wheels spins hope every day.

So far, we’ve managed to produce 150 kilos of hand-spun yarn-a living tapestry of skill and passion that has found its way to happy customers, destined for natural dyeing, rugmaking, felting and many other creative uses.

At the heart of our center are the seven remarkable women who craft each spool with care. One of these women is Shushan. Every morning, Shushan arrives full of determination, ready to transform raw wool into threads of opportunity. For her, this isn’t just about spinning yarn-it’s about weaving her life’s story together with the legacy of her community. Working full time, she finds both pride and purpose in the craft. As she puts it:

“This job has given me not only a livelihood, but also a connection to the generations before me. Every thread I spin is a testament to our strength and hope.”

Her words echo the sentiment of everyone at the spinning center. The renovated facility in the municipality building has become much more than a workplace-it’s a sanctuary where tradition meets modern opportunity. With new equipment and a supportive environment, the center has blossomed into a vibrant hub for creativity and empowerment.

Every kilo of yarn, every spindle turned by these dedicated hands, carries a piece of their story. Their work not only brings them financial stability but also reaffirms their role in preserving a cherished cultural art. From each carefully spun thread to the finished product reaching delighted customers, our journey is a celebration of communal effort and the dreams spun into every fiber.

Thank You:

We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your ongoing support. Your contribution is instrumental in weaving a brighter future-one strand of wool at a time.
