Summary

Arm.wool revitalizes Armenia's wool value chain - sheep to product, blending ancient craftsmanship w/ modern sustainability & traceability. Born of challenges faced by rural farmers & artisans, our project is not just about wool, but about creating livelihoods, empowering women, & reclaiming national tradition. The heart of this is a spinning center in Amasia, where women from border towns work raw wool into quality yarn. These threads carry stories of resilience, craftsmanship, & community.

Challenge

The Wool Project was born out of the realization that up to 90% of raw wool produced by local farmers is going to waste due to a lack of infrastructure, awareness, and opportunities for value-added processing. It's burned, or at best stuffed into mattresses. Farmers face challenges in shearing, sorting and more, resulting in financial losses and underutilized resources. Parallel, local carpetmakers and knitters are struggling to source affordable, high-quality materials for their crafts.

Solution

The project tackles rural unemployment and wasted high quality wool by addressing gaps all along the wool value chain - introducing new skills and knowledge in shearing, spinning, dying and more. By transforming discarded wool into handcrafted products, we provide farmers, spinners and others with sustainable income opportunities. The initiative preserves traditional skills, empowers women, and promotes eco-friendly practices, reducing waste while uplifting communities through economic growth.

Long-Term Impact

This project has the potential to create a sustainable ecosystem that benefits rural communities for years to come. By establishing consistent income streams for farmers, spinners and weavers, it brings renewed hope to a marginalized region of Armenia, challenging patterns of under employment and neglect. Over time, this initiative can inspire similar programs, strengthening rural economies and fostering community resilience. We envision the project location to become a hub of thriving activity.
