A day of learning, empathy, and connection

Our interns recently had the meaningful opportunity to visit HelpAge India’s Elderly Village, an experience that left a deep and lasting impression on each of them. The visit was thoughtfully planned to provide hands-on exposure to geriatric care while also helping the interns understand the emotional, social, and physical realities of ageing with dignity.

From the moment they arrived, the interns were warmly welcomed by the residents and staff, creating an atmosphere of comfort and openness. As they walked through the village, they observed the well-organized facilities and the compassionate care extended to the elderly. This setting offered them valuable insights into the importance of creating safe, respectful, and nurturing environments for senior citizens.

The highlight of the visit was the time spent interacting with the residents. The interns engaged in heartfelt conversations, listened to life stories, and shared moments of laughter and reflection. Many residents spoke about their journeys—their struggles, achievements, families, and the challenges they faced in their later years. These conversations helped the interns realize that ageing is not just a biological process but a deeply human experience that deserves understanding, patience, and respect.

Through these interactions, the interns also witnessed the emotional needs of the elderly—especially the need for companionship, attention, and a sense of belonging. It became clear that simple gestures such as listening, smiling, and spending time together can make a significant difference in their lives. This realization fostered a sense of empathy and responsibility among the interns, encouraging them to think beyond textbooks and theories.

The visit also included an orientation session by the staff, who shared their experiences and challenges in providing geriatric care. The interns learned about the physical and mental health issues commonly faced by the elderly, as well as the importance of holistic care approaches that address both medical and emotional well-being. This practical exposure enriched their understanding and strengthened their commitment to serving vulnerable communities.

Beyond learning, the day was filled with genuine human connection. The interns left with not only knowledge but also a renewed sense of purpose. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the residents and acknowledged how the experience had changed their perspectives on ageing and caregiving.

Overall, the visit to HelpAge India’s Elderly Village was more than just an educational trip—it was a powerful reminder of the values of compassion, respect, and service. It reinforced the importance of standing by our elderly population and ensuring that they live their later years with dignity, care, and love.
