This project is restoring 5 hectares (12 acres) of rainforest in north-eastern Australia that was severely burnt in the Australian bushfires in 2019-2020. It will remove invasive weed species that have inundated burnt areas and restore much needed habitat for endangered wildlife including the Koala. This project supports Indigenous people of this region and local community affected in the bushfires. The world watched as this land burnt and it is our chance to restore this beautiful rainforest.
Australian rainforests are still struggling to recover from the 2019-2020 bushfires . In Eastern Australia the fires burnt over 5,500 hectares, impacted communities, and endangered tropical rainforest. Although the fires were over a year ago we are seeing long-term damage to the this rainforest. It needs our help to recover and we must rebuild lost habitat for endangered animals. This project will recover 5 hectares (12.3 acres) of burnt rainforest and plant trees to replace lost habitat.
We are restoring burnt subtropical rainforest by removing the invasive weed species that have inundated burnt areas after the fires and by planting trees. This rebuilds the habitat that was burnt during the fires and provides food species for local wildlife. We bring together environmental scientists, ecologists, and members of the community to plan each site for long-term habitat restoration results. This restoration work is the only way fire affected sites recover their functionality.
5 hectares or 12.3 acres of rainforest will be recovered. Over time this will grow into healthy, functioning, rainforest and provide food and habitat for native wildlife that would not have recovered without our intervention. Local Indigenous regenerators and the local community are involved in this project so the social outcomes include a community hands-on connection to rainforest recovery, employment, and volunteer experiences.
