Merry Christmas to our wonderful Wildlife Warriors!
We are gearing up at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for the festive season and it's all go go go. Coming into summer, the season of heat, humidity and those sometimes disasterous summer storms, we don't expect the flow of patients admitted to the Wildlife Hospital to be slowing down any time soon.
In our quiet months we can receive around 100 phone calls a week relating to wildlife emergencies, but come mammal breeding season (spring/summer) and the warmer weather, we can receive up to 100 phone calls a day.
Over the past year we have had almost 900 koalas admitted into the hospital. That number has increased from last year's 836 and we aren't even finished the year yet. The average cost to treat a koala is around $5000 and it can cost up to $10,000 to treat some of them!
We are still getting all sorts of wildlife brought in for us to treat, with up to 65 animals across 11 species admitted each day. Being hit by car is the single biggest reason animals are admitted to the hospital and with all the extra traffic out and about in the holiday season we are sure to see animals suffering the consequences. The Wildlife Hosptial is open 24hrs a day and for us, Christmas day is no exception. We will be continuing to treat animals already in care and take on any Christmas critters that come through the door on the 25th.
Without the help of such generous people, we wouldn't be able to provide such a high level of care to all the wildlife that passes through our doors. From all of us at Wildlife Warriors and the patients at the Wildlife Hospital, we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Our Wildlife Hospital is self-funded and we don't receive State or Federal funding. This facility costs around $2.5million to operate each year and we need your help. So get into the Christmas spirit and give our wildlife a chance to get the help they need so we can get them home for Christmas.
