Summer Season a Success!

By Austin Fowler | Volunteer

Aventureros Paddleboarding
Aventureros Paddleboarding

Aventureros is having an incredible summer season! Participants are receiving regular lessons about conservation and relevant environmental issues, and they continue to develop skills to safely access and learn about the Bahía de los Ángeles Bioreserve and its marine life. The program is growing and developing on a weekly basis, and the Aventureros kids amaze us with their passion, energy, and care for the local environment!

We’re also doing something new this summer season! A subgroup of Aventureros, who have named themselves Guías (Guides), have been leading visiting groups of Masters students through collecting plastic pollution data on sandy beaches throughout the bioreserve. With each visiting group, the Guías train the adult students to conduct the research protocols. They then lead them through collecting data for submission to The Big Microplastic Survey, as well as data about other plastic pollution that will be used in reports to come directly out of Aventureros. Each time, the Guías also lead a large beach cleanup to ensure they always leave the area cleaner than they found it. The record for one beach is 36kg (or 79lbs) of collected trash!

The Aventureros kids inspire us on a daily basis with their incredible attitudes and the strides they are making. One of these kids, Jhon (pictured in goggles), has completely learned how to swim and snorkel this summer! That’s yet another local child who previously had limited access to the beautiful and important waters along his shores, who can now access and enjoy it safely. His growing love and appreciation for the bioreserve will lead to wonderful things in the future. Way to go Jhon!

None of this would be possible without the support of you and the rest of our amazing donors. Thank you so much for all that you do to make this possible, and we look forward to continuing to partner with you to cultivate a generation of Baja conservation leaders!
