Well the weather finally cooperated enough for us to get the small concrete structure underway. This is the wet-room where the waterbirds will go when they first come in to us. Downed pelican's for instance are notoriously delicate and don't do well in the cooler weather we experience during the season when the northern babies migrate to Belize. This room is warm and draft-free and our babies can hang out in comfort while they get back up to weight (often they are 50% of their ideal weight when they come in) and we can evict their parasites (a rather unpleasant medication that isn't administered until they are much stronger)
The periodic rain is unfortunately keeping the half-dug wading pool good and soggy, so for now we concentrate on the building. Jose, our fabulous enclosure-builder has pegged out the aviary and we will be working on that getting that up very shortly.
In the meantime, our water-birds continue to start their rehab in our once-lovely bathroom and graduate to the raptor barn which has been hijacked for pelican season.
Here are two of our current guests who, strangely enough, both had a run-in with large catfish on the same afternoon. It was a double trip to the vet to get the barbed fish removed from their pouch and the lacerations stitched up. As with most juveniles we receive, they were almost half of their ideal body weight and full of parasites. You can read their full story on our website blog. I don’t know about them, but we can’t wait to get this purpose-built enclosure finished!
Thank you all again from the BBR team and their feathered guests for your generous donations. We are in your debt!
