Case study
Mr. Anand (Name changed)
On September 30, 2022, Ms. Sheetal Mundada, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, was called to initiate counselling for organ donation of a brain-dead patient at KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Belagavi, Karnataka.
Mr. Anand, a 30-year-old, male patient, resident of Athani Village, fell at home and collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the private clinic of their family doctor, who suggested a few investigations. The test results were not good, so Prashant's family was told to take him to KLE Hospital for further management.
The family made a call to KLE Hospital, briefing the condition of the patient. Mr. Pramod Sulikeri, PRO, KLE Hospital, visited Athani village and shifted the patient to the hospital.
In the hospital, patient was declared brain-dead by the treating team of doctors and Sheetal was called to initiate counselling for organ donation with the family. She introduced herself and the Foundation and began by asking the father what he knew about the condition of his son. He said that he fully understood his son’s condition and under the circumstances the only good outcome would be to donate his organs and save the lives of many waiting for a life-saving transplant.
He and his younger son did have a few queries regarding the allocation of organs. Sheetal explained in detail that the organs were a national resource and SOTTO (State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization), the state body, was the nodal body that decides who gets the organ. She efficiently handled queries like the time taken for the whole process and the handing over of the body. Then, Mr. Manoj Nayak, the grief counsellor of Jeevasarthakathe, SOTTO Karnataka, took the required consent from the family.
After completion of all the paperwork as mandated by The Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994, the patient was shifted to the Operation Theatre for retrieval of the organs on October 01, 2022. The organs harvested were heart, lungs, liver, skin and corneas.
While the body was being handed over to the family members from the mortuary, KLE Hospital, in association with MOHAN Foundation, paid a unique tribute to the departed soul with a "Walk of Honour".
