Case study
Mr. Ravi Kumar (Name changed)
On November 8, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s transplant coordinator received a call from the
ICU of KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre (KLE Hospital), Belagavi,
Karnataka, informing her about a potential brain-dead donor.
Mr. Ravi Kumar, age 57, belonged to Sambra village in Belagavi district in Karnataka.
He was a civilian employee in the Indian Air Force and was an active member of the Ex-
Servicemen’s Association. He received the Best Commander Award in 2015. It was a
dreadful day for him on November 5, 2022. While travelling to the Sambra Air Force Station,
he met with an accident. He was received at the KLE Hospital. A major head injury led to loss
of consciousness.
Mr. Ravi was declared brain-dead by the treating team of doctors at KLE Hospital and MOHAN Foundation’s transplant coordinator, Ms. Sheetal Mundada, was called to initiate counselling for organ donation to the family. Ms. Sheetal introduced herself and the Foundation to Mr Ravi’s eldest son and began by explaining the exact condition of his father. He was informed about the organ donation process in the event of brain death. He needed some time to discuss things with his mother and younger brother.
On November 9, 2022, after a few counselling sessions, the family gave their consent for
organ donation. The younger son had a query regarding disfigurement of the body after retrieval of organs. To that, Mrs. Sheetal informed him that organ donation does not cause any obvious disfigurement to the donor’s body. Organs and tissues are always removed with the greatest of care and respect. After organ retrieval, the patient’s incision line from where the organs are retrieved is closed and dressed the same way as after any other operation.
On November 10, 2022 at 10 am, the patient was shifted to the operation theatre for retrieval of the organs, after completion of all the paperwork as mandated by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994. The organs harvested were the heart, kidneys, and corneas. While the body was being shifted to the ambulance from the mortuary (where the Panchanama and post mortem were done), KLE hospital in association with the MOHAN Foundation, paid a unique tribute to the departed soul with a “Walk of Honour” on November 11, 2022, at 11:30 a.m.
Mr. Ravi gave new lease of life to five people through his organs. The following benefited from the transplant:
The Belagavi and Hubli police provided a green corridor to facilitate the kidney transportation. The story of the donation was covered by the media and published in Vijayavani Newspaper.
Testimonial:
“He was a giving person who would always be the first to help anyone in need. He gave the
gift of life to other people through his organs. He proved that a soldier is a soldier forever”-
Mr. Ravi’s younger son.
