Training & online courses on Transplant Coordination and Organ Donation
Advanced Skill Development Workshop on Improving Living Donation
An advanced one-day workshop on "Improving Living Donation" was held on February 12, 2023, at the Abu Sarovar Portico hotel, Chennai. Senior Transplant Coordinators across India attended the workshop. The topics such as the use of social media to improve donation, special judgements that support living donations and non-directed altruistic donation were discussed in the workshop. Senior transplant coordinators across India attended the workshop.
One-year Online Post Graduate Diploma in Transplant Coordination and Grief Counselling (PGDTC)
A total of 49 participants have enrolled in the course. One from Nepal and others from various parts of India such as Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal. The participants were shared their credentials to access the resource materials which were made available on the e-learning platform
One-month Transplant Coordination Professional Certificate (TCTP)
The one-month online Transplant Coordination Professional Certificate course was conducted from 4th March 2023 to 5th April 2023. A total of 11 participants including nine from India (Gujarat - 1, Jammu and Kashmir - 1, Karnataka - 1, Maharashtra - 2, Odisha - 1, Uttar Pradesh - 2, West Bengal - 1) and one from Ghana and one from Botswana enrolled for the course.
Masterclass on Enhance Your Presence on LinkedIn
MOHAN Foundation organized a Masterclass on “Enhance Your Presence on LinkedIn”- a workshop in collaboration with Network and Alliance of Transplant Coordinators (NATCO) for its employees and NATCO members on February 18, 2023. Ms. Gurnoor Kaur Behl, Creator—Online Personal Brands; Founder, House of GKB; and Co-Founder, Delhi Queer Spaces was the invited faculty for the session.

OD awareness float at the Goa Carnival 2023
Special Event: a soulful online concert of Sufi music by Ritu Nooran
On March 11, 2023, MOHAN Foundation organized a soulful online concert of Sufi music by the talented singer, Ritu Nooran, in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Young Indians. The concert was held in aid of “Anudaan – Making Transplants Affordable” – an initiative of MF that supports underprivileged children to undergo life-saving transplants. While the event was brought to people free of cost, MOHAN Foundation urged people to open their hearts and contribute to this life-saving endeavour.

Police training: Role of police in organ donation process
Multi-city sensitization sessions/events on organ donation
Multi-city sensitization sessions/events on organ donation were organized face to face and on online platforms like Facebook, You Tube & zoom for participants belonging to the cities of Delhi, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Raipur, Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Baddi (HP), Goa, and Imphal.
Target audience were students (first-aid, paramedical, medical, college, school, neurosurgery PG, nephrology, law & management), NSS volunteers & teachers, hospital & nursing staff, corporate staff, doctors, nurses, transplant coordinators, college staff, schoolteachers, dialysis patients, donor and recipient families, & general public.
In this quarter over30369 people were reached through 153sessions.
Community Radio Programs for mass mobilization
MOHAN Foundation organized six radio programs on organ donation in this reporting period for the rural population of Rajasthan, which was broadcasted on:
MOHAN Foundation Organ Donation Helpline
MOHAN Foundation’s 24X7 helpline gives information on organ donation & transplantation, pan India in 8 languages. MF Helpline number’s visibility is increasing & families on their own look up through internet browsers or phone to find out information about organ donation. In this quarter, 2852 calls were facilitated by MOHAN Foundation’s executivesthat resulted in9 eye donationsand 1 skin donation saving 19 lives.
Organ Donation Facilitated by MOHAN Foundation’s Transplant Coordinators
With continued efforts from MOHAN Foundation’s Transplant Coordinators, the number of donations (eyes, organs & body) have been maximized thus saved many lives in their respective states in this quarter. A Total of 371 lives across India were saved through 332 corneal donations, 22 kidney donations, 8 liver donations, 1 Pancreas donation,3 lung donations, 4 heart donations& 1 skin donation.
Case study
Saksham Kumar
On April 10, 2023, Saksham a 16-year-old boy and a 10th grade student, after taking his exam, on his way back home on his bicycle, met with a tragic accident at Maruthi temple main road, Sulga village, Belagavi. A passer-by made a phone call to Saksham’s uncle, Mr. Shiva, who took Saksham to KLE Hospital in Belagavi.
In the hospital, Dr. Abhishek Patil, Neuro Surgeon, KLE Hospital, attended to the case and told the family that no surgery would help the patient’s recovery as there was a massive internal bleeding. He further added that Saksham had Intracranial Hemotoma.
Despite the doctor’s best attempts, he was declared brain-dead on April 12, 2023.
Rajesh, the transplant coordinator of KLE Hospital, made a phone call to Sheethal Mundada, Counsellor, MOHAN Foundation, to immediately visit the hospital and initiate counselling for organ donation. On reaching the hospital, Sheethal came to know that Dr. Patil had already
spoken to the family and had explained the critical condition of the patient and that he was brain-dead.
Sheethal then spoke to the family consisting of the potential donor’s mother and sister, explaining in detail about brain-death and the process of declaration of brain-death. Despite their grief, the family members accepted the reality that they had lost their family member. The MF counsellor then suggested to them that under the circumstances the only good outcome would be to donate the organs of Saksham and save the lives of many waiting for a life-saving transplant. The family members outrightly refused for organ donation and the counselling had to be concluded.
After some time, the MF counsellor approached Mr. Shiva (Saksham’s uncle), a retired military officer who had some knowledge about organ donation. She requested that he speak with the family to re-examine their decision. After several rounds of discussions both with the counsellor and amongst family members themselves, the family consented to organ donation.
The first brain-stem death declaration was done at 1200 hours. The MF counsellor then called up Mr Manoj, Transplant Coordinator, Jeevasarthakathe, the State Deceased Donor Transplantation Body, to inform him about the potential donor at KLE Hospital so that he could process the documentation as it was a medico-legal case.
Manoj arrived at the hospital at 1630 hours. He then went to the APMC police station to get the clearance for the organ donation process.
The second brain-stem death declaration was done at 2000 hours.
On April 13, 2023, at 0700 hours, the patient was shifted to the Operation Theatre for retrieval of the organs.
The following organs were retrieved and allocated as per the state protocol:
The heart was not retrieved due to moderate to severe mitral regurgitation, with mild dilation of the left ventricle and was therefore unfit for transplantation.
The procedural formalities were completed, and the body was handed over to the bereaved family at 1700 hours.
During the mourning period, Sheetal paid tribute to the donor and personally visited the village to honour the family who took the brave decision to donate the organs of Saksham, thus setting an example for the others to follow.
