Case study
S Prakash (name changed)
Mr. Prakash was a 12-year-old eighth grader at a Huzur Nagar, Telangana Government school. His father was a motor bike mechanic, while his mother worked for a daily wage. His parents refused his repeated requests for a "smart phone" and instead advised him to improve his grades and pursue a higher education in a prestigious institution.
After the summer vacation, he refused to return to school unless his demands were met, and when his father refused, he warned him, reprimanded him, and refused to comply with his demands. On the fateful day of June 14, 2023, he took a friend's phone and, in a fit of rage, searched the internet for recordings of suicide attempts before attempting one at his home. He lost consciousness and was taken to Aware Global Hospital, Hyderabad. His condition remained unstable despite receiving the most effective treatment.
The physicians eventually diagnosed "hypoxic brain injury." Every effort possible was made to save his life. However, he was pronounced "brain dead" by an experienced panel of physicians. The family was devastated.
Dr. Bhanu Chandra, Senior Transplant Coordinator at the MOHAN Foundation, gave the family members a detailed explanation of Prakash's irreversible condition and shed light on the concept of organ donation, which could improve the lives of many patients awaiting organ transplants. He explained to them that organ donation was the only positive outcome of this situation. He went on to explain the organ donation procedure to the family and patiently answered all their questions.
The family was grieving the loss of their loved one, so they requested additional time to consider organ donation. Bhanu met with the family multiple times. Finally, the family consented to organ donation in the hope that Prakash would live eternally in a number of others as a result of this noble act.
On June 23, 2023, Prakash’s kidneys, corneas, and liver were retrieved and utilised thus, saving the lives of five people.
