MOHAN Foundation receives the Best NGO award on Indian Organ Donation Day MOHAN Foundation received the ‘Best NGO award’ by the Honourable Minister of Health and Family Welfare of India, Dr Mansukh L. Mandaviya at the 13th Indian Organ Donation Day organised by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) August 03, 2023, at Manekshaw Centre, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. The award given in recognition of the work done by MOHAN Foundation in the field of deceased organ donation across the country.

Ripon Building turns green on 'National Organ Donation Day, 2023'

The Ripon building is the seat and headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation in Chennai. It is an example of neoclassical architecture, a combination of Ionic and Corinthian styles. 

On August 03, 2023, being the 13th National Organ Donation Day, the Greater Chennai Corporation led by Dr J. Radhakrishanan supported the cause by illuminating this iconic building in green colour.  The green colour symbolises hope for those who are waiting for a second chance at life through transplantation. It conveys our gratitude to Organ Donors and their families for giving the greatest gift of all, the gift of life.

Radio Campaign with 94.3 my FM on the occasion of Organ Donation Day

On 3rd August 2023, a radio campaign was organized by the MOHAN Foundation on the occasion of organ donation day. In this campaign, interviews were recorded with Dr Raj Gajbhiye-Dean, GMCH Nagpur. He spoke on raising awareness of organ donation, low rates of organ donation in India and how we can improve the rates. Dr. Selukar Urologist spoke about types of organ donation, legal aspects, which organs can be donated by a living person and deceased person and the criteria for it, he also gave a message to the listeners that you should keep your organs healthy by eating healthy and doing exercise. Dr. Ravi Wankhede shared the story of a personal and deep connection with organ donation.

Flag Hosting Ceremony on Indian Organ Donation Day

To celebrate the National Organ Donation Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony was organized at Angdata Smarak by MFJCF on 3th August,2023. OD Flag Hoisting was done by Smt. Shubhra Singh Ji, IAS Additional Chief Secretary -Medical & Health Department, Government of Rajasthan. The Leader of Opposition party Sh. Rajendra Singh Rathore also graced the event. All the MFJCF members and staff along with the Convener hosted the event.

Inauguration of Organ Donation Pakhwada on Indian Organ Donation Day

Hon’ble Chief Minister Inaugurated the “Angdaan Jeevandan Mahaabhiyaan”- Organ Donation Pakhwada  in Rajasthan on Indian Organ Donation Day- 3rd August, 2023. Chief Minister Shri Ashok Gehlot said that there is no nobler act than organ donation. At present very less number of organs are being donated as compared to the requirement, hence the society should come forward and pledge for support. Shri Gehlot launched the “Angdaan Jeevandan Mahaabhiyaan”- Organ Donation Pakhwada on 3rd August.

Annual International Conference of NATCO

16th Annual International Conference of NATCO, October 7-8,2023, KolkataA two-day conference was organised by the Network and Alliance of Transplant Coordinators (NATCO) on October 7–8, 2023, at ITC Sonar and ITC Royal Bengal, Kolkata. The theme of the conference was “moving towards uniformity,” signifying the need for uniform procedures across all spheres of organ and tissue donation. The conference was held under the aegis of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT) and supported SBI Foundation.

Government meetings

Meeting with NOTTO, New Delhi

MFJCF was been invited to take part in the planning meeting for “Seva Pakhwada Event” by MOHFW, Govt. of India observed from 17-09-2023 to 2-10-2023. During this period Organ Donation Pledge campaign was organized by National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) in order to increase the awareness. For further planning to reach to various levels of the society, a meeting was organized in the hybrid mode, under the chairmanship of DGHS, on 03-09-2023 (Sunday) from 10:00 am to 01:00 pm at NOTTO.

Meeting in Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Rajasthan

Meeting held on 15th Sep.,2023 at Swasthya Bhawan, Jaipur under chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary (Medical & Health) on action taken report on meeting held dated 19-07-2023 to increase corneal collection and Keratoplasty as well as Organ Donation in the State. MFJCF members were invited for this meeting and conveyed the information as per agenda.

MISSION 2030

MFJCF members and staff attended the meeting held on October 12, 2023 at University Commerce College at 4 PM. It was organised by Govt. Of Rajasthan depicting the work done and prepared VISION 2030 Document of various departments. Regarding organ donation honb'le Chief Secretary mentioned that Rajasthan is the first state to start Green corridor in Bharat. Also, a wonderful scheme of govt. is notified as Chiranjeevi Yojna, which  provide privilage of reimbursement of expense occur in organ transplant even in other states of Bharat for citizens of Rajasthan.

Training & online courses on Transplant Coordination and Organ Donation

 

One-month Transplant Coordination Professional Certificate (TCTP)

The one-month online Transplant Coordination Professional Certificate course was conducted from 18th September 2023 to 27th October 2023. A total of 51 participants from Nigeria (Abia State) and Indian students from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh enrolled for the course.

 

Multi-city sensitization sessions/events on organ donation

Multi-city sensitization sessions/events on organ donation were organized face to face and on online platforms like Facebook, You Tube & zoom for participants belonging to the cities of Delhi, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Raipur, Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Baddi (HP), Goa, and Imphal.

Target audience were students (first-aid, paramedical, medical, college, school, neurosurgery PG, nephrology, law & management), NSS volunteers & teachers, hospital & nursing staff, corporate staff, doctors, nurses, transplant coordinators, college staff, schoolteachers, dialysis patients, donor and recipient families, & general public.

In this quarter over 26302 people were reached through 231sessions.

 

Community Radio Programs for mass mobilization

MOHAN Foundation organized six radio programs on organ donation in this reporting period for the rural population of Rajasthan, which was broadcasted on:

  • 100.2FM Radio Pink city conducted a Quizon AIR on August 09, 2023.
  • 101.2 AIR on September 30, 2023, with Professor Amla Batra.
  • 101.2 AIR on October 07, 2023, with Dr. Neelam Jain, Sr. Consultant Gynecology-SMS Medical College, Jaipur
  • 100.3 AIR on October 21, 2023, with Mrs. Seema Sehajpal, Principal,Dharav High School Jaipur

 

MOHAN Foundation Organ Donation Helpline

MOHAN Foundation’s 24X7 helpline gives information on organ donation & transplantation, pan India in 8 languages. MF Helpline number’s visibility is increasing & families on their own look up through internet browsers or phone to find out information about organ donation. In this quarter, 3496 calls were facilitated by MOHAN Foundation’s executivesthat resulted in12 eye donations and 2 body donation saving 12 lives.

 

Organ Donation Facilitated by MOHAN Foundation’s Transplant Coordinators

With continued efforts from MOHAN Foundation’s Transplant Coordinators, the number of donations (eyes, organs & body) have been maximized thus saved many lives in their respective states in this quarter. A Total of 198 lives across India were saved through 170 corneal donations, 17 kidney donations, 7 liver donations,2 heartvalves donation,1 lung donations, &  1 skin donation.

 

Case Study

Mr. R Kumar (name changed)

 

On October 09, 2023, at 0955 hours, Duty Supervisor of Kripadashini Advanced Hospital

(KAH), Palace Compound, Imphal contacted MOHAN Foundation team about a potential

brain-dead donor in their ICU. Mr. R Kumar, a 31-year-old male patient, was

admitted at KAH on October 7, 2023, at 0722 hours with altered sensorium followed by loss

of consciousness.

 

At around 1400 hrs, MOHAN Foundation team along with the treating physician met with

the family members of the patient and explained to them the process of brain stem death

testing. The family members requested to wait for another day to conduct the testing and

asked for any possibility of referring the patient to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical

Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, Imphal, for further management.

 

On October 10, 2023, the patient was transferred to JNIMS as per the family’s wishes and

was admitted to the Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU) at 1133 hours. At JNIMS, the MOHAN

Foundation team, represented by Ms. Monica and Ms. Udayini, conducted initial discussions

with the patient’s brother and sister. Both were open to the idea of organ donation,

although the final decision rested with the patient’s wife, who was not present at that time.

On October 11, 2023, at 0955 hrs, after the brainstem death certification, the MF team-

initiated counselling for organ donation with the wife. With a heavy heart, she expressed

her willingness to proceed, stating, Even though I couldn’t save him, at least his kidneys will

be alive in someone else’s body.” At 1020 hours, the family gave written consent for the

 

With the completion of all the paperwork as mandated by The Transplantation of Human

Organs and Tissues Act, 1994, the patient was shifted to the operation theatre for retrieval

of the organs. With the greatest respect, the transplant team held a minute of silence to

honour the donor before making the incision.

 

Every effort was made to prevent the donor’s family from experiencing any procedural

delays in the release of the body. At 1712 hours, the body and all relevant documents were

respectfully handed over to the donor’s family. The hospital staff including the Medical

Superintendent, paid their last respects during this solemn moment.
