From Sheltered Training to a Professional Kitchen

By Cheer | Children are us Foundation

Do you remember Awei (name anonymized for privacy)?

With a Level C Chinese Cuisine Certification and a strong determination to succeed, Awei has always aimed to work in an open workplace so he can support his younger sister and elderly father.

After undergoing comprehensive training at the Hi Special Needs Sheltered Store, Awei successfully secured a position as a kitchen assistant at Xiaoyuan Japanese Cuisine. His responsibilities include slicing tofu, skewering ingredients, peeling vegetables, and plating dishes. Though Awei felt nervous initially, with the support of his mentors and job coaches, he has gradually adapted to his new environment. Now, he confidently sends out perfectly plated dishes .

Having worked for four and a half months, Awei continues to strive toward his goals—not just for his career but to ensure he can take care of his family. Awei says he will work diligently, follow in the footsteps of his mentors, and someday hopes to become a capable family leader and an outstanding chef .

The Hi Special Needs Foundation operates over 30 training centers across Taiwan, offering safe and suitable work environments. Each individual is provided with custom-designed tools and workflows to help them acquire practical skills. The foundation also promotes Level C Certification programs to help participants gain nationally recognized credentials, boosting their confidence to transition into mainstream workplaces.

For businesses interested in hiring individuals with disabilities, please contact the foundation’s Vocational Rehabilitation Team.
