Clean Water for Rural Villagers in Burkina Faso

BARKA Foundation is implementing a new water project in our Burkina Faso hometown, Fada N’Gourma. It’s called the FADA WATER PROJECT. This endeavor responds to an urgent need for clean water access for tens of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were forced to leave their rural villages and come to the city of Fada for their own security. This project is becoming a reality today thanks to all of our donors.

The project consists of drilling a well that will connect to a large water tower, powered by a solar pump. The water system will connect to other water fountains in the area and serve thousands of residents including IDPs. As BARKA will be purchasing the land on which this well will be drilled, it will also allow us to create a large community garden. The garden will employ local women to grow vegetables and fresh greens year-round enabling them to feed their families and generate an income for a sustainable livelihood.

We have several excellent local partners technically supporting the project, including the Ministry of Water, the Ministry of Agriculture and Association Nourrir Sans Detruire (ANSD) a local association which trains smallholder farmers how to maximize crop yields, increase soil fertility and economize water through agroecology. ANDS will teach and train the women gardeners to understand and properly use these important agroecological techniques, essentially creating a kind of living example and training space that can benefit the entire Fada community. This has been a long-time dream for BARKA that is finally coming to fruition.

We are currently on the ground looking at parcels of land to purchase and expect to begin project implementation as early as next month. We will achieve all these goals together as we are strong and determined to create well being in people's lives together.
