HARVEST TIME ON BARKA'S LAND, FADA WATER PROJECT
![]()
1. Introduction
The Fada Water Project stands as one of the BARKA Foundation’s most transformative and visionary undertakings. It marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history, as it is the first time the Foundation has acquired its own land to implement a long-term, community-driven initiative. This project embodies BARKA’s mission to improve access to clean water, strengthen food security, empower women, and provide sustainable solutions for vulnerable populations.
2. Project Objectives
The primary objectives of the Fada Water Project are:
- To ensure reliable access to clean drinking water for the local community.
- To establish sustainable agricultural practices through irrigation and gardening.
- To create long-term food security by planting fruit-bearing trees.
- To empower women through active participation in gardening and income-generating activities.
- To support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who have resettled in the area due to insecurity in their home villages.
3. Key Activities and Achievements
- Land Acquisition and Well Construction:
For the first time, BARKA acquired land specifically for community development. A well was successfully drilled on this land, providing potable water for drinking and irrigation. The well currently serves more than 300 individuals, significantly improving their daily access to clean water.
- Establishment of an Edible Forest:
To promote long-term food security, 250 fruit-bearing trees were planted, creating the foundation of an edible forest. This initiative ensures a sustainable source of nutrition for future generations while contributing to environmental restoration.
- Community Gardening and Women’s Empowerment:
Women from the local community have taken a leading role in gardening activities. Using water from the well, they cultivate vegetables and leafy greens, which improve household nutrition and provide opportunities for small-scale income generation through the sale of surplus produce.
- Support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs):
The project has become a lifeline for hundreds of IDPs who fled insecurity in their villages. By providing access to clean water, food, and livelihood opportunities, the Fada Water Project contributes to their resilience and integration into the host community.
4. Impact and Outcomes
- Improved Access to Clean Water: Over 300 individuals now benefit from safe drinking water, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and improving overall health.
- Enhanced Food Security: The edible forest and community gardens provide diverse sources of nutrition, directly addressing malnutrition and food scarcity.
- Women’s Empowerment: Women’s active involvement in gardening strengthens their economic independence and social standing within the community.
- Environmental Sustainability: The planting of fruit trees contributes to reforestation, soil conservation, and climate resilience.
- Humanitarian Support: The project offers critical assistance to displaced populations, fostering stability and hope in a time of crisis.
5. Future Directions
The Fada Water Project is designed to be a scalable and replicable model. Future plans include:
- Expanding the edible forest with additional tree planting.
- Developing training programs in sustainable agriculture and water management.
- Strengthening market linkages to enhance income opportunities for women gardeners.
- Exploring renewable energy solutions, such as solar-powered irrigation, to further increase sustainability.
6. Conclusion
The Fada Water Project exemplifies BARKA’s commitment to holistic, community-centered development. By combining access to clean water, sustainable agriculture, women’s empowerment, and humanitarian support, the project has created a powerful model of resilience and hope. It not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the groundwork for long-term sustainability and prosperity in Fada and beyond.
We can't do all this without your continuous support. Thank you for everything you are doing for the BARKA Foundation.
