The Irerero preschool is more than just a physical building. The library is one important part that is much more than simple walls. It is comprised of donated books collected by volunteers, who carried them one by one to the village. Interestingly, most books are written in English, while the local language is known as "Kinyarwanda".
Yet, it turns out that books and their stories can capture the imagination of both teachers and children no matter the language they speak. In this photo, one of the preschool teachers is using Amelia Bedelia, a popular children’s book, to great effect.
Reading out loud reinforces the formation and strengthening of connections between parts of the brain controlling memory, language and speech. These children are caught up in the words and actions of the story and look captivated by the teacher’s presentation. This is learning, and learning builds capacity for thinking and creativity. And beyond the physical walls of the school, that is what makes possible a better future for everyone:children, teachers, famlies...and you!.
