Feeding Communities, Keeping People Warm, Bringing Connection
As winter deepens, communities across South London are facing unprecedented pressure. Rising food prices, soaring energy bills and colder weather mean more people are being forced to choose between heating their homes and putting food on the table. Loneliness also intensifies during the winter months, particularly over Christmas, when many people are at risk of spending the festive period alone.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Be Enriched has been preparing for and responding to this increased need ensuring people can access warm meals, affordable food and welcoming spaces throughout winter, including over the Christmas period and into the new year.
Community Canteens: Warm Spaces Through Winter
In the past three months, we have delivered 60 Community Canteen sessions, welcoming 2,000 people through our doors. Attendance has been consistently high, reflecting the growing impact of food insecurity, fuel poverty and social isolation across South London.
From December through January, our Community Canteens in Tooting, Clapham and Elephant & Castle will serve over 1,000 people healthy, home-cooked, three-course meals. Over the festive period, we will host special Christmas canteens, creating spaces of celebration, dignity and companionship for people who might otherwise spend Christmas alone.
Our canteens continue to be places of warmth and belonging, not just food provision. With support from Sercon, we hosted a Bingo lunch, bringing joy and connection to guests during the colder months. We also work closely with surplus food partner, City Harvest, Dons Local Action Group and Neighbourly rescuing high-quality food from landfill and transforming it into nourishing meals for our communities.
Keeping Homes Warm
We know that food insecurity does not exist in isolation. Through our partnership with The Fuel Bank, we have distributed £1,957 in fuel vouchers, helping guests heat their homes during the coldest months. This support has been critical in reducing the pressure families face during winter and preventing the impossible choice between heating and eating.
Food Bus Project: Reaching Families Through Winter and Christmas
From December through January, the Food Bus and Food Float will reach around 1,200 people, helping families access fresh, affordable food during the most financially demanding time of year.
Supporting Children and Families Over the Festive Break
Winter and school holidays place particular strain on families whose children rely on free school meals. Through 80 Food Bus stops, we supported families to access affordable food outside of term time, helping bridge the gap during the holidays. We delivered Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) sessions during the autumn period, serving just under 100 meals and welcoming 40 children and their families. These sessions combined nutritious food with nutritional education, including cooking workshops and hands-on learning about ingredients and healthy eating.
Over the Christmas holidays, we will continue this work through our Kids Clubs ensuring children can access healthy food, activities and supportive spaces throughout the festive break.
The Food Bus team also supported a local primary school Christmas fair, serving healthy, home-cooked daal to around 50 children and family members, extending access to warm, nourishing food within the wider school community.
Looking Ahead: Supporting Communities All Winter
Winter is the most demanding time of year for our services. Cold weather, rising costs and increased isolation mean demand remains high well beyond Christmas Day. Our teams are preparing to continue operating through January and the coldest months, keeping canteens open as warm spaces, the Food Bus on the road, and support available to those who need it most.
Thank You and How You Can Help
None of this work would be possible without your generosity. Your support helps us:
Serve thousands of warm, nutritious meals
Keep our canteens open as safe, welcoming spaces
Deliver affordable food through the Food Bus and Food Float
Support children and families during the school holidays
Help people heat their homes during winter
As demand continues to rise over Christmas and into the new year, donations are vital to ensure no one has to face winter alone.
Thank you for standing with Be Enriched and helping us turn food into warmth, dignity and connection when it matters most.
