Doctor welcomes patients dressed as superhero

By Niti Takemoto | Niti Takemoto

Humanized operating room

Can you imagine a child being welcomed at the door of the operating room by their favorite character, before going into surgery? At GRAACC hospital, a reference in the treatment of childhood cancer, this is how physician anesthesiologist Guilherme Portela Perfeito welcomes his patients before the procedure.

“The surgery of a pediatric patient is a strain for the whole family. Feelings such as fear, apprehension and anxiety are frequent and it is at the moment of going into the operating room that they become more apparent. The idea is that the presence of one of the children’s favorite superheroes brings more lightness and magic to this stage of the treatment and that the patient has positive memories of the process,” explains Dr. Guilherme Portela.

Due to the rigorous process of disinfection for entry into the operating room, Dr. Guilherme puts on his costume and welcomes the children at the lobby. He then proceeds to sanitation and changes clothes for the anesthesia procedure. His routine at the hospital consists of anesthesia for the various surgical procedures performed by GRAACC: implant or removal of catheters, abdominal surgeries and resection of abdominal tumors, eye procedures, among others. Every month, 120 procedures on average are performed there.

GRAACC hospital has as a principle and essence a humanized treatment and a warm welcoming of patients and their parents. This requires more attention to and interaction with the patients, both before and after the procedures, as well as a highly-qualified team. And this is only possible with the support of donors like you. Please contribute so that initiatives such as Guilherme’s multiply.
