Pedro's journey: strength, and a future ahead

By Ludmila Piatek | Comunicacao e Marketing - GRAACC

“GRAACC gave us our son back.” That’s how Valéria sums up the rebirth of hope the family experienced when they arrived at the hospital. Pedro was only six years old when he started having severe headaches.

Tests identified a tumor, and the family faced a period of great uncertainty until they were transferred to GRAACC, a turning point. "When the doctor said, 'I will take care of your son,' hope returned," recalls Márcio, the father.

Strength, unity, and holistic care.

Between chemotherapy sessions, consultations, exams, and adjustments, the family experienced the welcoming atmosphere that defines GRAACC. The famous "coffee with milk" served by the volunteers, for example, became one of Pedro's favorite rituals —simple, but full of affection. "Even today he remembers that coffee with joy," says Valéria.

The parents also highlight the care provided by the professionals, who see each child beyond their diagnosis. "Here, nobody is just a patient. We have always feel supported," says Márcio.

A childhood preserved, even during treatment.

At GRAACC, Pedro found not only treatment, but also a welcoming environment. He participated in the toy library activities, made friends, played, painted mandalas, assembled objects, and even took photography lessons. Creative and skillful, he has always been a calm, curious child with a passion for music.

School didn't stop either. During his treatment years, he studied with the teachers from Escola Móvel [Mobile School], always wearing his name tag and carrying his backpack, so he felt "in his classroom." The hospital staff contacted his original school, ensured he kept up with the curriculum, and he never failed a grade. On the contrary, he continued to progress at his own pace, with support, dedication, and a lot of effort.

A future full of possibilities.

Today, at the age of 14, Pedro continues to receive support and is growing with autonomy. He enjoys music, video games, building things, and is thinking about studying something in the health field or in professions that help other people, something that has been part of his personality since he was little.

His story is one among many that illustrate what happens inside GRAACC: children and teenagers who continue living, learning, and dreaming, even during treatment. For the family, the feeling is clear: "GRAACC for us is life, hope, and the chance to see our son move forward."

In December 2025, Pedro experienced an exciting milestone: on the 13th, he completed junior high school. An achievement that filled his parents with pride and symbolized everything he had overcome. And he continues strong, creative, and prepared for new chapters. Now, with a diploma and a bright future ahead.
