Maj Satish shares an impact story

Maj Satish - a doctor in the Army was a Postgraduate student in 2024. He had attended the one day workshop. He had full scores in the post test evaluation! What followed is exactly what we aim for when we conduct these programs — not just immediate excellent learning, but sustained academic impact.

------------------------------------------------------------

Background: The INHS Asvini Workshop

In November 2024, QMed conducted a focused workshop at INHS Asvini, the hospital of the Indian Navy in Mumbai. This program was supported through the educational grant received from Pfizer in 2023.

The participants included faculty members and postgraduate students — clinicians actively engaged in research, academic writing, and thesis work.

The workshop covered two core components that form the foundation of QMed’s teaching: Literature Search with PubMed and Reference Management (using Zotero). Both were designed to be practical, hands-on, and immediately applicable to ongoing research work. (More details)

A Participant Returns

Maj Satish wrote to us to share his story

“I completed the Research Methodology course along with a focused workshop on searching PubMed and reference management using Zotero. Both programs were directly applicable to my postgraduate thesis work and had a significant impact on the structure and quality of my academic writing.

The research methodology component strengthened my approach to formulating research questions, conducting systematic and focused literature searches, and organizing evidence in a coherent and scientifically sound manner. It provided practical guidance on developing a clear framework for the review of literature and aligning it logically with study objectives. This brought discipline and clarity to my thesis writing process.

The Zotero workshop was particularly valuable in streamlining reference management. It enabled efficient organization of articles, accurate Vancouver-style citation, elimination of duplication errors, and smooth formatting of manuscripts according to journal requirements. The time saved and the reduction in technical errors during submission were substantial.

Importantly, the skills gained extended beyond the thesis. They directly contributed to the writing and successful publication of two research papers. I would strongly recommend these courses to postgraduate students and clinicians who wish to improve the rigor, organization, and overall quality of their academic writing.”

Beyond a One-Day Workshop

What stands out in this impact story is not just improved thesis writing, but sustained academic growth.

The ability to conduct structured literature searches and manage references accurately does more than solve immediate academic challenges — it builds long-term research capability. In this case, it contributed directly to two published papers within a year of attending the workshop.

For us, this reaffirms the value of focused training in literature search and reference management — skills that continue to deliver results long after the workshop ends.
