Pacuare end of season report 2023

As another nesting season comes to an end, we try to reflect on every action that helps us to continue with our work and ultimately reach our goal.

2023 hasn't been easy - but at the same time we are recognizing many areas that need urgent attention, and sometimes it is harder to accept faults and flaws than to actually take action!

In turtle terms, the year was successful. We registered a total of 181 nests , and managed to protect 163, which is over 60% of nests saved on Pacuare beach. We managed to release nearly 4000 baby turtles back into the ocean, giving the three species that nested a better chance of survival in the future.

Unfortunately, nature was against us  as weather conditions associated with El Nino, such as low precipitation, and high temperatures, caused lack of development in many nests.

Our relationship with the community can be challenging at times, but also it is refreshing see see a commitment from those who support the project, and work night after night to protect the turtles. Our hope is that more people within the community will see their incredible example, and also join forces with us, rather than using the turtles as a resource.

We have advanced in leaps and bounds with the improvements to the property and instalations, thanks to generous donations from GlobalGiving. This year saw new solar panels and batteries, new kitchen and cooker, newly painted cabins, and reinforcements installed on all the cabin doors.

We still have a long list of tasks to undertake for the 2024 season, but thanks to our volunteers and supporters we are confident that we can keep on.
