Help our Vaccinators pedal toward change!

By Pat Boland | Director, Rural Poultry Centre, Malawi

What if community-based poultry vaccinators could make a huge impact to raise the livelihoods of Malawian farmers? Well, they can, and they do by protecting village poultry from disease!

Their work is practical, impactful and, because it's unsubsidised, truly sustainable - we know this from our grass roots surveys and analyses. Their work raises livelihoods and resilience for farmers and constitutes a micro-business income for vaccinators.

So, what if you could amplify that impact to perhaps double what it was? Well, you can - through the simple expedient of giving that vaccinator a basic means of transport - a bicycle.

We've made a start. We are looking for at least 15 bikes and we have almost one and a quarter. And if that quantity sounds odd, it makes an important point: you can donate a whole bike if you are able but a fraction of a bike will also be much appreciated. Leave it to us to put the pieces together.

Join the movement today and help our vaccinators roll out resilience across rural Malawi!

Timothy Chimangeni dropped by to pick up some more vaccine the other day so we quizzed him a bit.

He told us how pleased he was to have been selected as a community based vaccinator because he can now do so much to prevent the yearly chicken deaths from chitopa (that's the local word for Newcastle disease).

"When I first started vaccinating, we did not have any means of transportation and getting around to vaccinate chickens was a very tiresome task because the villages are widely spread" he told us. "In fact I was not able to reach many households. When we were given push bikes to do the vaccinations, it greatly assisted me on how far I can go and how many chickens I can vaccinate per vaccination season. Farmers in our area know how effective and important it is to vaccinate their chickens against chitopa. They see vaccination has significantly reduced deaths and they now have more chickens to raise."

"Having a push bike makes it possible for me to vaccinate even in the odd hours or the day, not just in the early mornings but also in the evenings when the chickens have been penned in for the night. I am very thankful to RPC for the opportunity to serve my community this way."
