We did not wind down 2024, we finished with a flourish. In this period, we saw more activity destined to change the birth registration landscape for everyone. Here we present just one case study and just one MASSIVE policy breakthrough, and one car accident.
Tonderai wanted to register his four-year-old boy Michael, but the mother was not cooperating, citing personal issues between her and Tonderai. She even refused to sign the papers when the police became involved. The police referred Tonderai to us and we were able to mediate the situation. The mother eventually travelled to Bulawayo, and we are able to support them through the birth registration process before allowing them to go their separate ways. Having failed during this time to enrol Michael in Early Child Development classes Tonderai was hugely relieved when he got a call saying Michael’s birth certificate was ready for collection.
A huge policy breakthrough will now allow secondary school students to complete their grade seven exams and graduate even where they don’t have a birth certificate. This is an enormous milestone in terms of providing education and removing the vulnerability of a child according to non-registration. Our enthusiasm is tempered though for two reasons. Firstly, whilst this policy is now in place some head teachers will likely ignore the policy so they will need monitoring and application of pressure to ensure they comply. Secondly, where access to school provides the impetus for many parents to register their children, they may view this as an excuse to not secure birth documentation. The result would be the raft of other issues which maintain a millstone of vulnerability around the life of an unregistered child or adult.
Towards the end of the year, our project vehicle was involved in an accident and finished 2024 off the road. This caused relatively minimal disruption. We are attempting to fundraise the approx. $2,000 repair costs separately.
Thank you for all your support!
