QUARTERLY REPORT – FEBRUARY 2025

BIRTHDAY TREE PLANTING FEBRUARY REPORT – GLOBAL GIVING
Project Number: #58012

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Tanzania is blessed with valuable renewable natural resources, including forests, freshwater sources, fisheries, abundant land, and unparalleled wildlife. Over 50% of Tanzania’s total land area is covered by forests and woodlands (URT, 2017), which provide essential habitats for biodiversity, protect watersheds, and offer crucial ecosystem services. The Northern Highlands of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, along with the Southern Highlands near Mbeya, provide fertile soils for agriculture and species-rich forests.

The Eastern Arc and Coastal Forests are biodiversity hotspots, home to some of the highest densities of endemic plant and animal species in the world. Throughout the country, a vast network of freshwater rivers and lakes provides drinking water, sustains agriculture, and supports hydropower generation. Tanzania also boasts diverse and iconic ecosystems. Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, is renowned for its high levels of endemic fish species, supporting a major fishing industry and ensuring food security and employment for local communities. Additionally, Tanzania’s coastline features numerous fringing and patch reefs, which are ecologically and economically significant as major fishing grounds and tourist attractions.

The land in Babati was once a lush, forested sanctuary for both wildlife and people. However, over the past 50 years, unsustainable farming practices and an increasing demand for charcoal for cooking have severely degraded the region’s forests. This has resulted in severe soil erosion, depleted water basins, and dried-up rivers.

Recognizing the fragility of our planet and the urgent need to restore and protect ecological integrity, TAJPI is committed to reversing this environmental damage. To achieve this, TAJPI is supporting 8,000 students from eight secondary schools in the Babati District in establishing their own tree woodlots. This initiative emphasizes ecological conversion by promoting self-sufficiency in firewood supply, improving nutrition, and making schools more sustainable learning environments. Through these efforts, we aim to play a pivotal role in reversing environmental degradation in Tanzania.

MILESTONES (October 2024 – February 2025)

TAJPI has made significant progress in promoting environmental awareness and tree planting among students. Our key achievements include:

  • Strengthening the Birthday Tree Planting Clubs at Galapo Secondary School by facilitating tree planting activities and encouraging more students to participate.
  • Conducting environmental conservation awareness campaigns and establishing tree nurseries at Babati Secondary School, Kwaraa Secondary School, and Kwaang’w Secondary School in Babati District.
  • Forming and strengthening Environmental Clubs at Hangoni Secondary School and Mutuka Secondary School to oversee the care and growth of planted trees.

FUNDRAISING STATUS AND OUR REMARKS

As we celebrate the joy and vitality of our students, we recognize a unique opportunity to connect special occasions like birthdays with meaningful contributions to our environment. Our Birthday Tree Planting in Schools project is designed to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in children by encouraging them to plant trees in honor of their special days.

However, our project currently faces a major challenge: it is underfunded on GlobalGiving. Despite our dedication and the enthusiasm of our young environmental champions, we have only reached 30% of our fundraising goal. This shortfall threatens our ability to provide the necessary educational resources and materials that support ecological conversion through tree planting and environmental awareness programs in schools.

Every contribution matters. With your support, we can bridge this funding gap and empower students to make a lasting impact on their environment. By donating, you are not only planting trees but also sowing the seeds of environmental consciousness in the next generation.

We invite our community and supporters to join us in transforming birthdays into a legacy of green! Your support will make all the difference. Thank you for considering a donation to our underfunded Birthday Tree Planting in Schools project on GlobalGiving.

Let’s grow a healthier future—one tree at a time!
