We would like start by highlighting a few distinct contrasts between Mali and the United States to demonstrate how much work has been accomplished with your support, even while much remains to be done. In the US, pregnant women receive confidential HIV testing as part of a routine prenatal checkup. In Mali, a pregnant woman has only a 31% chance of receiving an HIV test during a prenatal visit. We’re proud to report that 100% of pregnant women in our program have access to prenatal HIV testing.
In 2004, Hope Center Clinic became the first community health center in Mali to implement a Mother to Child HIV Transmission Prevention (MTCTP) Program. The program is was named Chez Rosalie, after our founding donor, and continues to be a model program for the effective elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission in the community of Sikoro, Mali. In 2018, the Chez Rosalie MTCTP Program provided HIV counseling and testing to 1,422 pregnant women and antiretroviral therapy to 8 HIV+ women so that each of their children would be born HIV free.
Expanding the benefits of the Chez Rosalie program to more mothers in Bamako has always been an important goal for Dr. Karamoko Tounkara, GAIA VF’s National Director and pediatrician, and thanks to your support, we are now in our second year of the Chez Rosalie MTCTP Expansion Program at Banconi clinic. The Banconi clinic serves almost three times as many patients as the Hope Center Clinic in Sikoro; thus, allowing the Chez Rosalie Program to reach even more pregnant women. In 2018 the Chez Rosalie Expansion Program at the Banconi Clinic provided 306 HIV tests per month to pregnant women, and of the twelve women who tested positive at Banconi, 100% are receiving HIV treatment, and all infants born to HIV+ mothers received follow-up care, including ARV prevention treatment and cotrimoxazole medicine to prevent bacterial infection.
