HIV, which stands for ‘Human Immunodeficiency Virus, was first discovered nearly a century ago. HIV is a sexually transmitted disease and is transferred from partner to partner. HIV weakens the immune system and makes it increasingly difficult for an individual’s immune system to fight off disease caused by bacteria. This can weaken their recovery response when a new pathogen is introduced. This creates a strenuous life for those afflicted by HIV, as they become more vulnerable to disease and less able to fight them off.
Left untreated, HIV can be detrimental to an individual. People who test positive for HIV also have the potential to acquire AIDS, which entails that the immune system has been completely compromised due to the presence of HIV. However, thanks to the great evolution of treatment options, those who are afflicted by the disease are able to live long and healthy lives, and may never develop AIDS. It is for this reason that it is crucial to have access to HIV treatment and HIV testing.
GAIA Vaccine Foundation’s ongoing program, Born Free of HIV in West Africa, works to eliminate the transmission of HIV from mother to newborn through HIV testing and treatment. With proper access to care, all children born to HIV positive mothers can be HIV free.
Providing the proper HIV testing and treatment is vital when considering the future of the infants being born. For a donation of just $25, you can support HIV testing for five women at Hope Center Clinic. For context, there are around 3,000 tests performed yearly. For $50, can support all laboratory tests conducted for one mother during her prenatal period, which includes an ultrasound. With your help, access to treatment and testing can be expanded to help many more mothers bring healthy, HIV free children to the world.
