Children born to HIV+ mothers are at risk of contracting HIV during childbirth as well as while breastfeeding. However, if HIV treatment is provided to the mother prior to childbirth and during breastfeeding, the spread of HIV to the newborn can be avoided.
Our Born Free of HIV initiative provides treatment and testing for women throughout their pregnancies and beyond to ensure the health of their children. All of the women who underwent treatment during their pregnancies have continued testing their children within our programs, and all of these tests have returned negative! This is an incredible feat for our program.
The Born Free of HIV program would not be possible without your support. With a donation of $25, you would be supporting HIV testing for five women in the clinic- we do over 3,000 tests a year. With a donation of $50, you would be supporting every single laboratory test for a mother during her prenatal period, which includes an ultrasound. These aspects of treatment are vital for the continued health of both the mother and child.
GAIA Vaccine Foundation is thankful for your support as we work to ensure that children born in Mali remain HIV free!
