Stopping HIV Transmission From Mother to Child

By Anja Schneider | Content and Community Manager

When a mother is HIV positive and lacks access to preventative care, there is a near certain chance of transmitting HIV to her newborn. In 90% of these cases, the HIV transmission takes place during childbirth. In the other 10% of cases, HIV transmission occurs while the child is breastfeeding. However, when an expecting mother has HIV treatment prior to childbirth and during breastfeeding, there is a near perfect method of preventing transmission if the right procedures are in place.

Our Born Free of HIV program was created to provide treatment to women throughout their pregnancies and their child’s infancy to prevent HIV transmission. EVERY single mother who underwent our program’s treatment and testing regiment have children that have remained HIV negative: an accomplishment that we want to ensure is accessible to an even larger group of Malian women.

Our Born Free of HIV program is able to expand and reach more mothers through YOUR support. With a donation of $25, you would be providing 5 women with the opportunity to get tested. This initiative tests more than 3,000 women a year, and is hoping to continue to expand this number. With a donation of $50, you would be supporting every single aspect of a mother’s laboratory tests during her pre-natal period- this includes an ultrasound! With an EXTRAORDINARY donation of $1,000, it would be because of YOU that every single activity operates within the Chez Rosalie maternity clinic for an entire month.

We are so thankful for your continued support in providing access to preventative healthcare for individuals in underserved communities. It is because of donor support that we are able to expand our influence to reach a wider group of people.
