Access to Treatment Can Prevent HIV Transmission

By Anja Schneider | Communications and Content Manager

With access to treatment and HIV care, every child born to an HIV+ mother can be born HIV free.

When women lack access to HIV treatments, there is a 100% chance that the child will be born HIV+. The highest likelihood of transmission occurs during childbirth, or when the child is being breastfed. However, if treatment is provided to the mother prior to the birth of the child, there is a nearly 100% chance that the child will be born HIV free.

Over the course of this program, we provided treatment to thousands of women during their pregnancies, resulting in 0 children being born HIV+, an incredible accomplishment.

With a donation of just $25, you would be providing 5 women with the opportunity to receive HIV testing. This initiative tests more than 3,000 women a year, and is hoping to continue to expand this number to reach even more members of Bamako. With a donation of $50, you would be supporting every single aspect of a mother’s laboratory tests during her pre-natal period- which includes an ultrasound. With an extremely generous donation of $200, you would support an outreach worker’s salary for one month. The role of the outreach worker is to go to mothers’ homes and encourage the mother to practice HIV prevention after childbirth, to reduce the instance of transmission. Your donations are what help our program function, and expand our reach to provide important HIV treatment and care to more women in Mali. Thank you!
