Access to Lifesaving Healthcare

By Anja Schneider | Content and Community Manager

Our Born Free of HIV program works to ensure that all children of HIV-positive pregnant women in and around Bamako, Mali are born HIV-free. By providing access to free HIV testing, counseling, and treatment, and by educating expecting mothers on the importance of early detection and care, we help prevent mother-to-child transmission and give children a healthy start in life. .

HIV transmission from mother to child takes place during birth 90% of the time. In the other 10% of cases, this transmission occurs during breastfeeding. Through our Born Free of HIV program, we strive to provide  HIV treatment to the mother prior to childbirth and during the first few months of life, which can prevent nearly 100% of this transmission!

The success of our program is clear. Every child born to a mother who partook in Born Free of HIV was able to begin their lives HIV free- an incredible feat and potentially lifesaving resource. You too can help expand our services and reach even more patients. With a donation of $25, you would be providing 5 women with the opportunity to receive HIV testing. This program tests over 3,000 women a year, and is hoping to continue to expand this number to reach even more community members of Bamako. With a donation of $50, you would be supporting every single aspect of a mother’s laboratory tests during her pre-natal period- this includes an ultrasound, a vital aspect of their pregnancy journey. With an extremely generous donation of $200, you would support an outreach worker’s salary for one month. The role of the outreach worker is to go to mothers’ homes and encourage the mother to practice HIV prevention after childbirth, to reduce the instance of transmission. Your donations are what help our program function, and expand our reach to provide important HIV treatment and care to more women in Mali. Thank you!
