Project Report | Dec 9, 2025
Beginning Life HIV Free

By Anja Schneider | Content and Community Manager

For the past 20 years, we have worked to educate and support the communities of Sikoro and Banconi, both within Bamako (Mali), through our ongoing health programs. Since the establishment of our clinic in these communities, we have provided prenatal care to 36,359 women and treated 192 babies born to HIV-positive mothers

Most HIV transmission from mother to child occurs during childbirth, in 90% of cases. The remaining 10% of transmission occurs through breast milk. Through our Born Free of  HIV program, we offer free HIV testing to all pregnant women and provide treatment and counseling to HIV+ pregnant women through pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding. Thanks to this comprehensive care and our team, we are proud to report ZERO cases of HIV transmission from mother to child in our clinics.

Here are the latest stats from our local clinics:

From January to September 2025 in Sikoro, we have seen 1,113 women for prenatal care, all of whom accepted further counseling, and 97% of whom accepted testing.

From January to September 2025 in Banconi, there have been 2285 women seen for prenatal care, all of whom accepted counseling, and 98% of whom accepted testing.

Our success would not be possible without your support. We look to our incredible GAIA Vaccine Foundation community to join us in this life-saving work.

·   $25 provides HIV testing for 5 women in the clinic- GAIA Vaccine Foundation conducts more than 3,000 tests a year.

·    $50 supports ALL necessary  laboratory tests for one mother during her pre-natal period. This includes an ultrasound!

·    $200 funds one month's salary for an outreach worker, who visits mothers at homes, reinforcing  HIV prevention practices after childbirth, and reducing the risk of transmission.

With your support, we can reach even more expecting mothers and infants in Mali, equipping them with the knowledge and care they need to prevent the transmission of HIV.
