The Impact of Intervention- Starting Life HIV Free

By Anja Schneider | Content and Community Manager

Our Born Free of HIV Program is dedicated to preventing the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children during pregnancy, childbirth, and the post-natal period. The program was created with the purpose of ensuring that with treatment and access to care, all children born to mothers living with HIV will be born HIV free.

Without the proper interventions, HIV transmission most commonly occurs during childbirth (in approx. 90% of cases) with an additional risk (approx 10% of the time) through breastfeeding. This makes early testing, accurate medical information, and consistent care essential for every expectant mother. Women who test positive receive ongoing counseling, treatment, and support to protect their health and that of their babies.

Below, find our impact at our Sikoro and Banconi clinics for 2025:

Sikoro Clinic: January to December 2025:

  • We saw 1,594 women for prenatal care.
  • 97% of the women we saw accepted further counseling.

Banconi Clinic: January to December 2025

  • We saw 3,141 women for prenatal care.
  • 99% of the women we saw accepted counseling.

All thanks to our incredible team of healthcare professionals, we are proud to report that there have been ZERO cases of  mother-to-child HIV transmission accross both clinics this year.

Help Us Reach More Mothers.

Our goal is to continue our pursuit of ensuring that every child born from an HIV+ mother begins their life HIV free. With your support, we can reach even more expecting mothers in Mali, connecting them with the healthcare they need. Learn more about how your donations can make an impact:

  • $25 provides HIV testing for 5 women in the clinic- we provide over 3,000 tests a year.
  • $50 covers ALL necessary prenatal lab tests for one mother. This includes an ultrasound!
  • $200 funds an outreach worker’s monthly salary- they support with home visits and postnatal HIV prevention.

We can come together to ensure that every child has a healthy, HIV-free start to life.
