While COVID-19 is slowing down across America, with treatments, vaccinations, and public health measures meeting the challenge, there is another, more stealthy issue impacting ourselves and our youth in its wake.
Mental health challenges created or exacerbated by the pandemic can linger untreated for a long time, all the while eroding the sense of well-being and thriving in kids and teens. These issues manifest themselves in many ways, affecting mood, appetite, sense of self-worth, relationships with peers, sleep patterns, and hope for the future. Some kids may act out, and some may retreat into themselves.
Club leaders across WA have been proactive in creating additional resources for Club kids and families to combat this challenging pandemic aftermath. Clubs have invested in Behavioral Support Specialists with the help of private and public grants, created calming spaces and activities, and invested in a curriculum that promotes better social and emotional awareness. Our Clubs are now training all of our staff in trauma-informed care.
Your ongoing support of Boys & Girls Clubs in WA ensures that our Clubs continue to serve all kids, especially those who need us most, in a compassionate, well-informed and prepared way. This approach helps our Club members to realize their potential and become caring, productive, and responsible citizens.
