Thank you for your generous donation to the Brazil Flood Relief Fund. Donations to this GlobalGiving Fund are already making a difference, providing emergency relief and long-term support to communities affected by last month’s devastating and recurring flooding.

In our first round of emergency grants to our trusted partners on the ground, donations from the Brazil Flood Relief Fund have supported several grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • Foco Empreendedor is a Santa Cruz do Sul-based social services agency that immediately launched distribution of supplies in support of health, hygiene, personal protection, and other basic needs in their community, as well as launching programs in environmental education and emotional support to those affected by the flooding.
  • Fundo Casa Socioambiental is a São Paulo-based partner that connects local civil society organizations to communities so they can work together for the advancement of environmental, social, and civil rights in South America, as well as in response and recovery to emergencies. Fundo Casa has a strong history of coordinating smaller organizations in flood-affected areas to  purchase and distribute emergency supplies, offer cleanup and reconstruction efforts, and provide other forms of highly localized, flexible aid to the people who need it most.
  • APUSA is a Porto Alegre-based partner focused on education and livelihoods. Because of their emphasis on education, they respond swiftly to ongoing floods by rebuilding schools, bolstering ongoing education, and offering basic services to students and their families.  Their team is focused on rebuilding  community and educational facilities in Porto Alegre by working hand-in-hand with their community to ensure children’s education continues during this difficult time,
  • Instituto do Câncer Infantil is a Porto Alegre-based organization with more than 30 years of experience serving children with cancer and their families across the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Their team is working rapidly to assess needs and ensure ongoing support to children and families affected by cancer in the flooding impact zone, with at least 86 families in their community of care directly affected by the floods. The Instituto’s volunteers are relocating patients and providing distribution of emergency supplies, including medications, as well as conducting mattress distributions and broad casework support for families with housing loss/damage through a WhatsApp helpline for families.
  • Themis - Genero, Justiça e Direitos Humanos is a Porto Alegre-based organization typically focused on discrimination against women in the Brazil justice system. But when the floods came, they relaunched their humanitarian aid program created during the pandemic. Themis is working with its network of female community leaders to assess the impact of the floods. They plan to distribute food, water, and hygiene kits, and contribute to the reconstruction of damaged houses based on their findings.

Your support of the GlobalGiving Brazil Flood Relief Fund powers community-led responses, and it means Brazilian communities affected by this devastating flood get the immediate relief and sustained support that they need.

Keep an eye out for additional updates on our response in this space on all the great work that your support mobilizes.

As always, thank you for your continued support to local-led, community-based emergency response!

With gratitude,

Amelia + GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
