A Memorable Visit to Edwards College Peshawar

By Muhammad Fida Hussain | Voluntary Director

Dear supporters,

The students of Yasmin Bibi Girls College (YBGC), Pir Sadi, Mardan, embarked on an exciting adventure to Edwards College Peshawar to witness a captivating stage play called “The Tragedy of Macbeth” by William Shakespeare.

This Edwards College was established in 1900 during the British colonial period. The red-brick buildings stood tall, whispering stories of scholars and thinkers who once roamed these corridors; the lush green lawns and ancient trees added to the magical atmosphere. We were in awe of the history surrounding us. Many great personalities have been here. Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, visited this college three times. The famous actor Raj Kapoor began his artistic journey at Edwards College, and legendary philosopher and poet Ghani Khan was a part of this college.

The students of Edwards College transformed into characters from Shakespeare’s play. Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the mysterious witches danced across the stage.

“The Tragedy of Macbeth” is a cautionary tale. It teaches us about ambition, power, and the consequences of our choices. Macbeth, driven by his desire for power, spirals into madness. Lady Macbeth’s guilt eats away at her. The students learned that our decisions shape our destiny. It’s like a ripple effect—what we do today echoes into the future.

The students of YBGC met Afsar Afghan, a famous singer and journalist, during the interval. The Director briefed him about the efforts of YBGC  and he appreciated it very much. We felt inspired to dream big.

The visit to Edwards College was more than a field trip; it was an awakening. The students returned to YBGC with a renewed sense of purpose. The historical backdrop, the captivating play, and the encounter with Mr. Afghan broadened student’s horizons. The students vowed to think beyond textbooks, question, dream, and aspire to greatness.

In Macbeth's words, “What’s done cannot be undone.” The experience at Edwards College will forever be etched in YBGC memories, urging us to choose wisely and strive for excellence.

YBGC extends its gratitude to the Global Education Campaign of the US, Dosti Welfare Organization in Pakistan and the generous donors for their invaluable support, assistance, and contribution to YBGC as they continue to empower and cultivate future women leaders in the Mardan region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
