Compulsory education is 12 years but the average education period for girls is 7 years in Turkey. CYDD will be supporting 250 economically disadvantaged girls in 7th grade for 6 years to continue their education until graduation from high school thus contribute to gender equality.
98% of the girls in Turkey are enrolled in school but continue education only for 7 years. Enrollment of girls in high school drops to 66%. Only 15.6% of girls with illiterate parents attend high school. 18% of girls under age 18 are married and 9.7% of women aged 18 are mothers. Due to poverty, low education, too many siblings and local customs, girls cannot continue their education. They need economic support to continue their education, have a job and seek a dignified life for themselves.
CYDD has been contributing to gender equality in education in Turkey by giving scholarships to over 110,000 girls during the past 30 years. 30% of these girls have continued on to university. This project will be a continuation of this goal.
The scholarship is an economic assistance for the girls to continue education, have a better chance to find a job, and take their place as an individual in the community. The project contributes for equal opportunity in education and life.
This project has provided additional documentation in a XLSX file (projdoc.xlsx).
