A Good Meal Every Day

In our most recent report, we shared the incredible strides we’ve made in the expansions of the Breakfast Program, possible majorly due to the monumental support from our GlobalGiving community. Due to the generous funding received, Zindagi Trust has successfully expanded this initiative, progressing from Early Childhood Education (ECE) to first grade at SMB Fatima Jinnah public School and up to class 4 at Khatoon-e-Pakistan public school this year. This expansion has brought smiles to an additional 413 students, marking a significant milestone in our collective mission to support well fed, attentive students at schools.

As the new school year commenced in August, we took the opportunity to enhance the nutritional well-being of our students by revising the breakfast menu. We understand the vital role a nutritious first meal plays in a student's day, hence our well thought out menu reflects a diverse range of dishes, including fruits, lentils, meat, rice, and more. We are committed to ensuring that students receive the essential vitamins, proteins, and carbohydrates necessary for their growth and development at this stage of their lives.

The following menu was designed for this term:

Monday - Seasonal fruit salad/Sandwiches

Tuesday - Yogurt with rice and lentils

Wednesday - Sandwiches with Ketchup

Thursday – Minces meat with potatoes and flat bread

Friday - Boiled Egg with Milk

Saturday - Rice and Lentils

Our strength lies in the quality of the work we uphold. Our staff actively engage in conversations with our students to create wholesome and enriching moments during the morning meals. As breakfast is laid out, we seize the moment to connect with students and inquire about their experiences with the offered meals. Recognizing the importance of feedback from all stakeholders, we also reached out to parents, seeking their input on the menu we have curated. One mother shared, "Zindagi Trust is doing great work. My daughter loves the breakfast at the school, except for ketchup and mayonnaise. Could you please encourage her to eat more fruits?" Such initiatives foster collaborative efforts between parents and the school to enhance student health and instill positive eating habits.

The testimonials from parents further affirm the success of our efforts. A father of a KG 1 student expressed satisfaction with both the breakfast offerings and the cleanliness of the school. These positive responses reinforce our belief that optimal nutrition, with a focus on balance, quality, and timing, is integral to a student's overall well-being.

Amidst the expansion, our breakfast room remains bustling with the energy of well-fed students, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and vibrancy. Despite the economic challenges posed by rising inflation in the country, this initiative allows us to prioritize the health of our students. We firmly believe that a holistic education encompasses not only academic excellence but also an environment and nutrition that enable students to concentrate and excel. Thus as winter makes its presence known we hope these breakfasts’ warm hearts and fulfil stomachs; protecting students against the harshness of the weather and invigorating their resolve to aim high in their mid-term exams.

Our commitment to promoting healthy eating habits extends beyond the breakfast table. We integrate lessons on nutrition into our academic curriculum as well. This allows us to educate students about the importance of a balanced diet and the role and need for various nutrients in their growth and attention. For grades 1 and 2, the breakfast room also serves as a great practical way to teach basic table manners and their importance, the use of cutlery, pleasantries and all the while provides a welcoming ambiance for conversation and fun for these young minds.

The positive impact we have achieved for the students, their parents, and the community at large would not have been possible without the invaluable contribution of our GlobalGiving community. Together, we continue to make a small difference each day in the lives of these young minds, nurturing them for a brighter and healthier future.
