Encouraging awareness for women's rights

Greetings from Peace Winds Japan in Kenya!

We are conducting various campaigns and events to promote awareness of women's rights while supporting the continued distribution of sanitary pads.

On this occasion, we held an event under the theme “take care of yourself and others,” where children performed dances to convey a message on that theme. In the Kalobeyei refuge settlement in northwestern Kenya, the number of teenage girls who have unwanted pregnancies has been increasing due to school closures caused by the coronavirus pandemic and economic deprivation.

Many of them are unable to come to school because of their pregnancies, and their future prospects are compromised as a result.

Peace Winds Japan has therefore been conducting activities, where, through song and dance, the following message is conveyed: "For the sake of your future, take responsibility for your own body and that of your partner." When girls and boys work together to think about and practice dance choreography, it helps to nurture mutual understanding and respect.

One boy who participated in the event said: "There are many children at my school who have had unwanted pregnancies, so I'm very happy to be able to raise awareness of youth pregnancy prevention through dance, which I love."

The energy of the children during the dance practice was overwhelming.

Young pregnancies are not the only difficulties that Kenyan girls are facing.

The lack of understanding and support for menstruation is also a problem for them.

Please help us so that as many girls as possible can live with a smile on their faces, even during menstruation.

Thank you for your continued support.
