During the intermediate days of Pessach Mrs. Hanna Yaffe from the IEA Reut Sadaaqa group organized a model Passover Seder in which she explained the meaning behind its different elements.
Hanna explained the seder order, regarding from her special Social Justice Hagaddah,, and started with the blessing over the wine (Kidush). She explained that it symbolizes a transition of status from a regular day to a festival day (and so it happens also on Shabbat).
About the Matzah, the bread of affliction, Hanna noticed how it is made of flour and water only- the same ingredients of bread- but it doesn’t get a chance to rise, making it just between not being food at all and being actual bread.
Hanna explained other elements of the Seder plate, and told that during the seder a Jew is supposed to nurture the experience of coming from slavery to freedom. Even if she has never been through a situation of slavery, she tries to connect to other moments of spiritual and psychological servitude.
Ruth, one of the guests present, shared how the past COVID19 year has been hard, especially the previous 2020 Seder, in which families had to be separated.
Sari-Johanna, another of the guests, shared some insights about the relationship between Pessach and Easter. The 40 days prior to Easter are called Lent, and some people abstain from eating certain foods, or doing certain activities during this period, as a spiritual preparation. The week before Easter is Holy Week, in which Christians remember what Jesus went through before the Crucifixion (on Good Friday) and Resurrection (on Palm Sunday).
The encounter concluded with wishes of Happy Holidays and a hot chicken soup prepared by Hanna.
