In late June of this year, the Interfaith Encounter Association, As part of the Interfaith Peacebuilding Initiative and with the support of USAID, facilitated and organized a three-day workshop for Jewish and Arab teenagers to film, edit, and present documentaries together.
The first day was spent on introductions, the basics of filmmaking, and ideas for what kind of documentary they wanted to make. The young participants eagerly spoke to each other about what they wanted to do and how they wanted to do it, their universal excitement crossing language barriers (but which sometimes needed the aid of Google Translate).
On the second day they filmed and recorded what they needed for their movies. Travelling and exploring Jerusalem together, what they filmed played second fiddle to a day full of joint adventures. After they finished filming, they returned for some well-earned falafel to accompany them as they started to edit.
The third and last day saw the groups huddle together in apt anticipation for the final touches on their masterpieces. Each group presented their documentary, answering each other’s questions and discussing how they were made. The first group focused on the dichotomy between the ancient and modern elements of Jerusalem, with the second focusing on the contrast between Jerusalem’s loudest and quietest areas.
