Kulika Uganda Project Progress Report
Submission Date: August 30th 2023

This report covers the period May – August 2023. It is the 9th report since initial project funds were received in October 2020.

Training activities
a) Intern students: A total of 17 student Youths (9 male and 8 female) from two institutions of higher learning in Uganda were trained on briquette making and use.

Use of briquettes
a) For brooding chicks: At least 6 women continued using briquettes for brooding day-old broiler chicks chicks. Apart from the cost effectiveness of using briquettes, they provide warmth longer thus allowing farmers to have more time concentrating on other activities. Additionally, 2 institutional buyers (poultry farms) have continued buying briquettes for both brooding and for cooking food for their workers.

b) Domestic cooking: During the period under review, additional 6 new clients started using briquettes for domestic cooking (with briquettes supplying to 70% of their fuel needs). Three among the six make briquette balls by themselves although largely for domestic use only. Women who have been using briquettes over the past, continued doing so even this quarter. Therefore, cumulatively, the women using briquettes for domestic cooking has grown to 56.

Source of Revenue: At least 27 women continued making and selling briquettes to supplement domestic incomes. 87% are from eastern Uganda and 13% from central Uganda.

Making and Marketing of Briquettes at the Kulika Training Centre
During the period, making and selling of briquettes continued. A total of 4,007 kgs were made and sold during the quarter. The revenue from the project, contributes towards the trainer’s salary as well as promotion of the project to reach more women. Additionally, the same revenue manages general maintenance of the machines and the solar drier.

Way forward:
Training Students/learners: In the next quarter, we will train at least 30 learners from the neighboring community on making and using briquettes.

Training more women and supporting those already trained to deepen skills: In the next quarter we will continue to sensitize and train more 50 women on briquette making and use as well as visit those already trained to further support them.

Appreciation and request: Kulika Uganda continued to appreciate the generous support received from GlobalGiving. The funds received have continued to support training of communities on alternative fuel energy for cooking and brooding as well as minimize negative effects to the environment through briquette making and use.
