Clean water saves lives. In rural Niger State, Nigeria, thousands of families still rely on unsafe ponds and streams for drinking water. This project will construct five safe borehole wells with hand pumps, providing reliable access to clean water for 2,500 people and protecting children from deadly waterborne diseases.
In rural communities of Niger State, especially in Rafi Local Government Area, families depend on contaminated surface water for daily use. This leads to frequent outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea-among the leading causes of illness and death for children under five. Women and girls spend several hours each day walking long distances to fetch water, exposing them to safety risks and forcing many girls to miss school.
Elite Star Foundation will construct five borehole wells equipped with durable hand pumps in selected rural villages. Activities include hydro-geological surveys, borehole drilling, installation of hand pumps, and construction of concrete aprons to prevent contamination. Each community will form a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) committee. Members will be trained to manage routine maintenance, collect small user fees for repairs, and promote safe water and hygiene practices.
This project will provide clean drinking water to over 2,500 people and reduce waterborne diseases by an estimated 70%. Children-especially girls-will regain time for school and play, while communities benefit from improved health and productivity. Sustainability is ensured through community ownership, low-maintenance hand pump technology, and ongoing monitoring by Elite Star Foundation. With proper care, these wells will serve families for decades.
