Hay Now!

By Andrea Wogsland | Development

When we look out over the first pastures as we drive up the long (yes, winding!) road to RTF, we are so happy and gratified to see most of the hay cover we’ve dreamed about for so long almost a reality.

We say almost because despite the hard work of our ranch hands, and the heartwarming generosity of those who have chipped in for this protective structure, we may not be able to install the concrete foundation due to the expense and instead use shale rock.

The wood panels you helped us to buy have been attached securely on the sides and more beams need to go up to complete the structure.

As we approach having this large protective structure securely completed, we could see more clearly how much hay it will actually hold. Answer- A LOT!!

Since embarking on this building project, and because our recent role in perhaps the largest horse rescue in US history has taken so much attention from our small but mighty staff, we also have embarked on a Hay Drive to raise enough money to buy a large hay supply at the best price negotiation can buy. Money talks, and the more money, the louder the voice!

Running a large sanctuary while also working every day on the national front to keep wild horses and burros free on the range isn’t easy, but we live for it. This project will make an incredible improvement in the work flow of the hard-working RTF ranch hands, to RTF’s budget through reduced hay costs by being able to buy a lot at once, and most importantly, to our beloved resident horses and burros, who, blissfully unaware of all the hard work, only know that their bellies are full of high-quality, nutritious hay. Click here to watch RTF prepare for the evening feed run.

Thank you to all our friends—those who have visited RTF’s American Wild Horse Sanctuary,  and those who we may never be lucky enough to meet— you are ALL a crucial part of the mission of Return to Freedom.
