Summary

Thousands of families in rural Uganda struggle to access safe, reliable water. Women and children often walk long distances to collect water from unsafe sources, increasing exposure to disease and taking time away from school and livelihoods. This project will construct community boreholes to provide clean, accessible water for vulnerable households, schools, and communities while promoting health, dignity, and resilience.

Challenge

Many rural communities depend on unsafe ponds, rivers, and unprotected wells, especially during dry seasons. Contaminated water contributes to preventable illnesses and places a heavy burden on women and girls who are traditionally responsible for collecting water. Long journeys also cause girls to miss school and leave families with less time for farming and income-generating activities.

Solution

The Girl Child Foundation Uganda will work with vulnerable communities to identify areas with the greatest need and construct safe, durable community boreholes. The project will involve community members throughout planning and implementation, while local water committees will receive training to support proper use, maintenance, and long-term sustainability of the water facilities.

Long-Term Impact

The project will increase access to safe and reliable water for vulnerable rural communities. Families will have a closer alternative to unsafe water sources, while women and girls will spend less time collecting water. Improved access to clean water will contribute to better hygiene, reduced health risks, increased school participation, and stronger household resilience.
