New Year, New Rescues, New Habitats!

By Pat Craig | Executive Director

On behalf of The Wild Animal Sanctuary, we hope you’ve had a wonderful start to your New Year filled with joy and celebration! As we move into 2024, we feel truly thankful for our supporters and all of the animals we’ve rescued and the habitats we’ve been able to build! We don’t know what animal rescue calls we will receive this year but if it’s anything like last year, we will have to be ready for anything!

One major success was our 2023 October Founders Day event! Both Founders and Habitat Creators were able to visit The Wild Animal Refuge between October 19th -22nd 2023 and tour the facilities which included the Carnivore Nutrition Center (CNC) and the Vet Clinic. Volunteers in bright orange shirts helped guide visitors through the Refuge, pointing out fan-favorite animals like Tupak the bear and “Hank the Tank”, a recently-rescued bear from California.

Many Founders and Habitat Creators had questions about the habitats and asked how recent rescues are adjusting to Colorado’s variable climate. Each habitat has been outfitted with underground dens, water supplies, and areas of mixed topography (hills, valleys, cliffs, trees, bushes, etc) for the animals to enjoy. Newly rescued animals receive full veterinary evaluations and treatments before being introduced into the large-acre habitats where they can live and roam freely with other animals of their kind. Additionally, the Wild Animal Refuge staff monitors the animals closely, making sure each animal is getting the proper nutrition and care needed.

Our biggest rescue of the year was in Puerto Rico, where we were called by the U.S. Department of Justice to rescue over 750 animals! The rescue included animals ranging from Black Bears to Donkeys to African Lions. After months of hard work and multiple heavy plane transports, these large carnivores landed safely in Colorado and were brought to The Wild Animal Refuge, where large-acre habitats were waiting for them. Because of your support, these habitats were ready for theses rescues. If not for your help, these animals would not have the specialized habitats that they live and thrive in today.
