WHO WE ARE

CSC provides affordable surgical care by skilled specialists, offers it free to those who need it most, builds capacity by the provision of sub-specialty surgical & international training, and fills gaps in current available healthcare.  Integral to CSC’s mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable surgical services.

A Toddler’s Burn-Healing Journey at CSC

Samnang is a 3-year-old toddler from Cambodia. He lives in Battambang province with his parents and two older sisters. His parents work in a nearby village as potato and corn farmers. Samnang is not yet in school, and he loves mangos, rice porridge, and playing with his sisters. In February 2023, he suffered burns over much of his body from a gasoline fire near his house. He was taken to a hospital nearby for treatment and had follow-up care at a clinic close to his house. The doctors there suggested the family travel six hours to Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh to seek further care. Samnang’s left hand had developed burn scar contractures, tightening the skin around his fingers and wrist, and limiting the function of his hand.  Following a contracture release surgery, he requires frequent physical therapy to optimize his recovery, as well as a treatment to replace the large portions of the surface of the skin and its deeper layers (dermis) that were destroyed by his burns.

Ultimately, surgeons are hopeful these procedures will improve his independence and function.  He and his family recently spent Christmas in CSC’s paediatric ward. Samnang’s parents shared they are grateful for the care and expertise of the hospital, and want Samnang to start pre-school soon.

We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives.
