Children's Surgical Centre Qu Report April 2024

WHO WE ARE

CSC is a healthcare organization that provides affordable surgical care by skilled specialists. CSC started as a small project to help victims of landmine injuries, many of whom were children. Since then, it has grown into what it is today - a tertiary teaching hospital with over 75 Cambodian staff.

We offer free or low-cost surgical care and rehabilitation in numerous specialties for economically disadvantaged patients. We also focus on building capacity by providing sub-specialty surgical training and international training to medical professionals. Integral to our mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable rehabilitative surgical services.

The Right Place at the Right Time for the Right Diagnosis

Chorng is a 60 year-old soup cart owner from Cambodia. He lives with a total of eleven family members in Phnom Penh. When not working, Chorng cares for  his aging mother, and listens to traditional Cambodian music. About a year ago, Chorng had an ear infection. This infection caused an abnormal growth to develop in his right ear, and he experienced pain, hearing loss, and ear discharge. He was unable to hear his customers at the soup cart and relied on others to help him.  On the advice of a neighbor, Chorng visited CSC for consultation. He was fortunate that visiting international surgeons recognized a more complex issue than initially anticipated - squamous cell carcinoma. This can be an aggressive cancer and required extensive surgery. After his operation, he spent several nights under careful observation where staff ensured his stability and comfort. After discharge, he plans to return to his soup cart with better hearing, better communication, and a sense of gratitude that he visited CSC when he did.

We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives.
