Building 10 classrooms for 500 students in Nepal.

In 2015 April when the earthquake struck Muskan’s village, her life was changed. She survived the massive disaster, but her road to recovery will be a long one. Like Muskan for so many girls living in underserved Himalayan communities in Nepal, going to school is a bright spot in her life. The opportunity to learn and be with friends gives girls hope for the future and a chance at a better life. But Muskan’s school was destroyed by the earthquake and her educational dreams came crashing down.

But thanks to the tremendous generosity of donors, friends,  supporters, our ground staffs and hard working community members for saving Muskan’s education. She is back into new and safe school now. With a gentle smile Muskan described the feeling of returning to school: ‘it was if all my hopes came back.’  She was not alone, over 36,000 classrooms were destroyed leaving nearly 1 million children unable to return to school. 1045 classroom were destroyed only in the communities where The Small World is working. The odds are worse for girls, when there is no school to attend and no roof over head.

Since 2015 we have completed 20 Earthquake safe classroom constructions, nearly 1000 students are back in new safe classrooms. Now Muskan can hope for the future, hope to build better lives for themselves because she is back in school and will remain safe.  We aim to build 100 permanent and safe classrooms by 2018 to bring earthquake affected Nepal back to learning. Education must always be a priority in emergency because being in school simply means children are safe from dangers like trafficking, child labor, abuse and violence.
