Nisha is 12 years old. She has five siblings. Both her mother and father have worked for many years in a brick kiln factory. The back-breaking and difficult nature of their work has led to them both becoming addicted to alcohol. Every year the family migrates for eight months to work at the factory to pay back the loan they have taken out from the brick kiln owner. This is a debt that, no matter how hard they work, they struggle to pay back. Due to debt repayments, the family do not have enough money to provide for their children's education.
Nisha has been enrolled in our study support programme for one year now and is finally getting an education for the first time in her life. Our study programme uses a unique curriculum to help children who have been excluded from learning and labelled as 'unteachable' learn. For example, our mobile education van has maths kits which include a new mob method of learning maths easily which is easy way for the children to understand and tablet computers filled with e-learning resources for children. We also provide kits of study material and school uniforms for students so that they can attend school.
As a result of our intervention, Nisha has learnt how to read from A-Z and she can read from the charts names of animals, fruits, flowers and part of the body. She can talk confidently about herself. She has learnt how to take better care of herself and comes to the centre every day clean and neat. She is helping her brother and sister to learn. Our mobile education van has introduced Nisha to computers and modern technology. Through this, she has learnt of the many different kinds of jobs that are available in contemporary India.
She has started to attend 4th standard in school (normally children her age would be in 6th standard) and we will be continuing to support her with additional study so she can catch up with students her own age. Nisha aspires to become a teacher so she can help other children who are not getting access to education.
