Sagar is 12 years old. His family are migrant brick kiln workers, and for 10 years have been returning to the same kiln to pay off their debts. As is common with many families, the family work each brick kiln season to pay back a loan to the brick kiln owner, taken out when the family could not get work in their home village to meet basic family expenditure.
As Sagar's family migrate for work, this has meant that Sagar has missed a lot of school. Even though he is 12 years old, he is 2 years behind and still in 5th standard.
Sagar attends our Maitri Non-Formal Education Centre which is enabling him to catch up with his schooling, mastering the key basics in literacy and numeracy. Our project staff liaise with his local village school where he is officially registered, so when he returns after the brick kiln season, he can easily reintegrate with his classmates.
Sagar was working alongside his parents in the brick kiln until he re-started his education at the Non-Formal Education Centre. Now, he is very happy to be able to participate in education. Our teachers have observed that his communication skills have increased and that he is constantly growing and learning new knowledge. Sagar now has the dream of wanting to become a teacher to help other boys like him.
